Causes

So what causes hair loss?

Hair loss in men and women may result from a number of factors:

Genes

  • Genetic inheritance is the most common cause of hair loss problems. If either parent is genetically predisposed towards baldness, their children have a 50-75% chance of inheriting this.
  • The tendency for male or female pattern hair loss begins to develop after puberty. In the vast majority of males with hair loss, the cause is ‘male pattern baldness’ (hereditary androgenetic alopecia). The presence of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in a genetically vulnerable man causes hair loss problems.
  • Hereditary female pattern hair loss is also caused by genetic factors, but is associated with other hormonal factors and conditions.

Myths and falsehoods

  • Hair loss is not caused by poor circulation, clogged hair follicles, frequent shampooing, wearing hats or helmets, or by mites. Most adults also lose 75-125 hairs every day as part of a natural process.
  • Illness and certain medications can also cause hair loss. It is possible that stress plays a role in causing hair loss too.
  • Eliminating DHT will slow or stop further hair loss, but it will not revive any dead follicles. Medication is available, but needs to be taken daily and may result in unwanted side effects.
